When does El Clásico take place?

El Clásico doesn’t have a fixed date, but there’s a recurring pattern that’ll help you plan your trip.

Each La Liga season features two Clásicos — one at Camp Nou, one at the Santiago Bernabéu. The first fixture almost always falls at the end of October, and the return leg somewhere between March and mid-May. Why? Because La Liga spreads the season’s marquee matches evenly — the first Clásico right after the international break, the second after the Champions League group stage, when everyone finally hits their stride.

Examples from recent seasons:

  • 2024/25 season: 26 October 2024 and 11 May 2025
  • 2023/24 season: 28 October 2023 and 21 April 2024
  • 2022/23 season: 16 October 2022 and 19 March 2023
  • 2021/22 season: 24 October 2021 and 20 March 2022

As you can see, the first Clásico of the season is almost always in the second half of October. The return leg is less predictable and depends on how La Liga schedules fixtures around European competition. It typically falls between mid-March and early May.

If you’re planning a trip to Barcelona specifically for the Clásico at Camp Nou, start checking the La Liga calendar as soon as it’s released in July. Also keep in mind that the final date and kick-off time are only confirmed about a month before the match — so hold off on booking flights until then, or leave yourself some flexibility in case the game shifts from Sunday to Saturday.

Can you actually get El Clásico tickets?

Yes — but with one important caveat.

At the time of writing, Spotify Camp Nou is undergoing renovation and its current capacity is around 60,000 seats. That’s nearly 40,000 fewer than the old Camp Nou. Once the stadium is completed and reaches its target capacity of ~105,000, ticket availability will improve significantly. For now, though, we have to work with what we’ve got.

At the old Camp Nou, a full sell-out was almost unheard of. I can only recall one real problem getting tickets — after Johan Cruyff’s death in 2016, when interest in the match was exceptional.

Today the situation is different. Capacity is limited, the team under Hansi Flick is playing brilliant football, and Camp Nou has just returned after its exile at Estadi Olímpic. The result? Virtually every match is a sell-out.

Demand obviously also depends on the team’s form and their position in the table. If Barça are having a rough patch, interest drops. But right now, that’s definitely not the case.

How to get El Clásico tickets?

Tickets will ALWAYS be available on FC Barcelona’s official website. The order of sale is always the same:

1. Closed sale for socios

The first to get access are the socios — official club members. Who they are and how to become one, I explain in detail in this article. The socios sale isn’t announced far in advance — you need to stay alert. It typically opens on a Monday between 10am and 12pm, about 2–3 weeks before the match.

2. Basic Plus tickets in open sale

After the closed socios sale ends, tickets go into the open pool as so-called Basic Plus. This is a special ticket category available to everyone — but significantly more expensive than the Basic tickets socios use. These are the tickets you see when you visit FC Barcelona’s website as a regular fan.

3. Additional batch closer to the match

Finally, if anything remains, it goes into the general open pool. There’s also a small additional batch released closer to the match date — these are seats freed up by season ticket holders who can’t make it for some reason. They tend to be the most expensive tickets available.

El Clásico ticket sales are not announced in advance. Set up an email alert on FC Barcelona’s website and follow the official channels — better to be safe than sorry.

El Clásico ticket prices — how much does it cost?

To put it bluntly: a lot. A whole lot.

For El Clásico on 10 May 2026 at Spotify Camp Nou, the cheapest tickets started from €319 and sold out instantly. The next available seats were already in the range of €500 and above.

Below are screenshots from FC Barcelona’s official website showing ticket prices in the Basic category:

Basic Plus tickets — available in the open sale for everyone — are even more expensive. The cheapest start from €1,449:

To be clear: these are official prices, from FC Barcelona’s website, with no third-party markup.

💭 Fun fact: Historically, Clásico ticket prices ranged between €200 and €400. But the 2024/25 season was a turning point — the last league match against Real Madrid (won 4–3) cost €750–€1,300 on the official website. This is the new reality and it’s unlikely prices will ever go back to where they were.

Which section to sit in at Camp Nou?

That’s a topic for a separate article — and one is in the works. I’ve sat in almost every section of Camp Nou and I know there’s no universal answer to “which seats are best.” Every stand has its pros and cons: sightlines, atmosphere, proximity to the players, sun exposure. Price differences are also significant — the Tribuna can cost several times more than the cheapest seats behind the goal.

A complete breakdown of the stands at Camp Nou — Tribuna, Lateral, Gol Nord, Gol Sud, Corner — along with photos from every section, my personal recommendations, and tips on where to sit depending on what you’re after (best view, best atmosphere, best price) is in my ebook “Barcelona Fan’s Guide”. There’s a full chapter dedicated to this topic, with photos of the view from every stand.

Buying tickets from 3rd party resellers — watch out

If you weren’t able to buy tickets officially, you’re probably considering other options. Here I need to warn you.

Third-party platforms like Viagogo, StubHub and similar sites, as well as Facebook groups, always carry risk. Scams are common, and tickets can turn out to be invalid at the gate. Even if you find an “honest” seller, remember that resale prices can be €500 or more above the official price.

Before deciding to buy from a tout — consider whether it might be better to choose a different Barça match. The atmosphere at Camp Nou is special regardless of the opponent, and tickets for league games against smaller clubs are available without any hassle and at reasonable prices. Better to go and enjoy the match than to feel disappointed — or in the worst case, cheated.

Summary

El Clásico is one of those experiences that stays with you for life. But it requires serious preparation — both in terms of tickets and the trip itself. Want to know everything? My ebook “Barcelona Fan’s Guide” will walk you through the entire process step by step — from choosing the match date, to flights and accommodation, to the best sections in the stadium and local fan culture.

Som-hi! See you at Camp Nou.

Hello Adrian, I was able to get a ticket but since they’re so expensive I wasn’t able to get 2 more is there by any chance a place to watch the game near by the stadium like a restaurant to still see the game? Thank you!

Hi Jared, sure. If you take Travessera Les Corts from Camp Nou (direction Les Corts metro), it’s full of bars and for sure you’ll find the match in one of them
